I have recently done a background check on myself and have found an unknown name and address associated with my social security number.

What does this mean and what should I do? I assume it means that someone tried to use my social security number and their address to receive credit cards. But where do I go from here?

Hi, I used my sister and my mom’s information to get credit cards and loans and I used their already issued credit cards without their permission. They both checked their credit reports and found out about it.They have both threatened to press charges and are in the process of filing a police report. What criminal charges and punishment am I looking to face currently. Do you think I will serve any jail time? I am in Pennsylvania and under Pennsylvania law.

I know that someone got credit cards in someone elses name, that person now knows but wont press charges because its a family member. This isnt the first time they have done this and I am furious and think this person needs to pay for what they have done. But if they find out I am the one that turned them in all hell will break loose, how do I go about this? Any good suggestions?

I’ve recently had an acquaintance that managed to cause my family some financial hardships, and now I think she may be using my ex’s personal information to obtain credit cards, etc…Only problem I’m having is that she used my computer, and address to do this. I have also paid some bills using what I thought was her account numbers that she had given me. Now I’m getting letters saying that I’m responsible for paying off the bills that she’s accrued. Any advice on how to go about clearing all of this up?

If the individual has my name and SSN#, what can they do?

I know they could probably open up credit cards in my name, but I wanted to know could they:

Break into my bank accounts?
Do backround checks?

What else can they do, tell me please
if i go to one of those annual credit reports or free credit report websites will I be able to tell there?

Starting on August 12th, someone has been trying to obtain credit cards and other credit related items such as a loan for $7k in my step-sister’s name. Even this morning, August 23rd at 9:00am, someone was trying to obtain credit cards.

My step-sister has a lawyer who is working on this for prosecuting the offender. She has an identity theft insurance that picks up on every transaction passed through her name. When they traced the ISP for who it could be, the source of the transactions was here in the home.

To the best of my knowledge, no person was awake this morning when someone was trying to obtain credit. What could the possible problem be with this particular situation?

I do not apply in stores for credit cards because I do not want to give the cashier my SSN.I do not accept ANY telemarketing calls.I dont like to pay for things over the phone with credit cards, because then someone has my credit card number.

What are some of the most effective ways to protect yourself from identity theft? Can you make it harder for yourself to get approved for credit cards or anything?

What have you done?
