I was on a site for dog adoptions, where I emailed this woman about an adoption, and received a reply that was a straight online scam. I never replied to her, but am worried that writing the email to her in the first place has given her access to some of my private information (IP, computer access codes, etc). I recall reading somewhere that simply opening a fraudulent email, or replying to the email, without actually giving up any information, makes you a candidate for identity theft because thieves have gotten around to encrypting emails itself. Does anyone know if this is true?? Thanks.

Today, I received a call from a man claiming to be from TIAA-CREF. He said there were discrepancies in my SSN and then rattled off a SSN. I didn’t respond yes or no but said that I would contact TIAA-CREF directly to resolve any problems. When I contacted them, the TIAA-CREF call center said no employee would ever call me about my SSN. Would it be a good idea to put a fraud notice on my credit report immediately? To make matters more complicated, I am right in the middle of applying for a mortage to purchase a home and I don’t want that process screwed up.

Strangers (mostly hot women (I am male), but some people generally with usernames that suggest they are women) have been sending friend requests to my myspace. I don’t have very many friends on myspace and not enough to do certain things on certain myspace games (Mafia Wars for example), so I’ve been adding them. But is this safe? My profile doesn’t display my address, but it does have my city and it doesn’t have my birthday but it does have my age. It has where I went to high school and where I’m going to college. It also has a picture of me. Is there any risk of identity theft even if I don’t give out any more information than is already on my profile?
Like I said my birthday isn’t on there. Also my last name isn’t displayed.

I submitted a transcript request form to a community college I attended for summer classes via fax. I put my name, address, phone and my social security number there. I left the form that I used to fax with my social security number facedown on my desk where I work at the national cancer institute with books on top of it and forgot to shred the form. Is there a risk that someone at work took my social security number and am I at risk for identity theft? The lab is kept locked at night and scientists there did not even know I faxed this form except my mentor, but he himself did not see me put the form facedown on my desk.. Also, will the fact that I faxed my social security # put me at risk?
I don’t have any credit cards but I have a join account with my dad.

Someone Help!?

The Greeley Tribune is taking the affadavits for arrest warrants in the Swift plant ICE raid there 5 at a time, and gives you some background on the identity theft involved.

Do you think this is a victimless crime?

LAPD wants, my full name, address, all my previous address, all my previous work, my social security number, my mother’s maiden name, bank name bank account numbers, all my credit card name and numbers etcetera. They have more information about me than what I can remember. Is it safe regarding identity theft? I am afraid that one bad LAPD employee might use my info to do identity theft. I have excellent FICO score. How safe is it?

So..I have to write a research paper on a great issue in the U.S. with some kind of a law, or bill waiting to be passed on it.

I chose to do mine on ID theft. All the good ones were taken.[abortion, patriot act, ect.]

Well I was hoping someone could give me a list of all of the current laws going on right now to prevent Identity theft, because before I write about how there are no laws going on and how the gov. should do more I want to know all the current laws going on.

Also, this needs to be arumental. I have my side, which is that THe goverment needs to do more for ID theft like passing more laws and bills that prevent it.

BUTTTT I need an opposing views argument… HELP!

OKAYY…Hope you can help me out. THANK YOU ALL!
